Hi there,
My name is Anna and I’m creating this GoFundMe to support Makito Kalunga, a 33-year-old member of our Portland, Maine community who was detained by ICE on January 23, 2026, while reporting for work.
Makito was born in Angola and has worked hard to build a meaningful life here in Portland, Maine. Makito is truly beloved by both patients and colleagues at his place of employment, an organization dedicated to providing health care services to vulnerable populations.
Makito is compassionate and giving and has a wonderful sense of humor. He brings warmth and humanity to our team each day. He has made an impact through his kindness, his work ethic, and the care he shows to others. Makito is active in his faith and community. His positivity radiates through his work and interactions with others.
In a close-knit city like Portland, immigrant communities are an essential part of our shared fabric, enriching the culture and depth of this city. Makito’s sudden detention has been heartbreaking and destabilizing. This situation has created immense fear and uncertainty, not only for Makito but for the many people who care about him and want to see him back in Portland, where he belongs.
This fundraiser has been created to help cover urgent expenses, including legal representation, bond costs, and basic support needs during this extremely difficult time. Any donation, no matter the amount, will help Makito access the advocacy and resources he needs right now. If you’re unable to give, please consider sharing this page to help spread the word.
Thank you for standing with Makito and our immigrant neighbors in Portland, Maine, and for showing up for compassion and community care when it matters most.
With gratitude,
Makito’s Work Family
