Hello! My name is Makenna Markham, and I have epilepsy. I was diagnosed when I was eleven, I am now 19 years old and a freshman in college. I haven’t been able to go a full year seizure free since 2016. Since starting college I have already had two seizures within the 6 weeks I have been here. Stress is a huge trigger for my seizures, and college is definitely stressful. My seizures can be dangerous, I am not able to tell when they will occur. This makes it unable for me to get myself to a safe place. I have fallen and hit my head, causing a total of 10 concussions. On 9/19/24 I experienced a seizure so bad it caused me to split my forehead open. This happened in class, and I have found myself struggling with my college education due to my disability.
Having a seizure alert dog would greatly improve my quality of life. I would love the opportunity to continue living independently, but I cannot do that without some help. Having a medical alert dog would keep me from experiencing serious injuries and provide me comfort whenever I have a seizure alone.
I have had surgery and take medication for my condition but this does not alleviate me from my symptoms. I hope to complete college and achieve my goal of becoming a social worker, but if I am unable to live safely on my own or continue to experience injuries I won’t be able to complete my education.
Anything helps, and I am eternally grateful ❤️
