The percentage of Black male physicians in the United States is 2.6%, a number that hasn’t changed since the 1940’s. I’m applying to medical school for the 2022-2023 application cycle to help change that.
If you don’t know me, my name is Makeen, and I am a non-traditional applicant who wants to become a primary care doctor. I am deeply passionate about supporting youth who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM) like myself, and have worked in different spaces across organizing and medical education to advance health equity, youth rights, anti-racism and social justice for the past 5 years. The end goal for me has always been to become a doctor, and this year I am finally in a position to apply to start pursuing this dream.
I am raising funds to help support me in applying for the yearlong application cycle. One thing I feel isn’t talked about enough is just how expensive it is to apply to medical school. I’m blessed to have a full time job, but with rent, insurance, car payments, gas (yikes), and other bills/expenses, affording enough to pay for the application cycle has been difficult as of late, especially as a young man living independently with his brother in LA.
To give you an idea of everything I’ll be paying for:
To create a pool of funds for this application cycle, I’m starting a fundraiser for myself to help keep my brother and I afloat and out of debt. I don’t come from a rich family, therefore I’m covering the costs myself to apply for medical school. Anything you can give to help us get through this transition is appreciated. If you are able to give, I hope you see it as an investment in jump starting the career of a future physician advocate, one deeply committed to the wellbeing and health of his community, his people, and the underserved.
Preferred donation method Cashapp ($MkYsr), Venmo (@Makeen-Yasar) or Zelle. Share with folks you know who might be able to contribute.

To give you an idea of everything I’ll be paying for:
- Primary Application for 25 Schools ~$1200. This one, “common application”, goes out to all the schools I apply to. Each school’s individual fees for you to send them your application range from $45-$120, so the cost increases with the more schools you apply to. Medical school admissions is very competitive which requires me to cast a wide net by applying to a wide range of schools
- Secondary Applications $400-$800. If a school is interested in what you submitted, they’ll send you another application for you to answer more questions for them to further assess you as an applicant (and yes, you have to pay for it). The cost depends on how many schools send you the additional secondary application
- Interviewing Costs ~$1000 for flights ✈️ ~$400-$800 for lodging If my application makes a good impression on the folks who review my files, schools will then invite me to interview on their campuses, which will require me to travel to those cities/states to interview.
- Additional costs will come for if I have to move cities or for other deposits ($$$)
- Total $3,000 - $3,800
