Well... Here we are...
After what has felt like 3 years of zoom readings, rewrites, and even more zoom readings, My Own Worst Enemy is finally making the step into the real world! On December 17th at Smash Studios, My Own Worst Enemy will be finishing up a week-long in-person workshop and presenting a full Concert Reading!
Let's set the scene:
About a month after a school shooting, the students of Christa Mcauliffe High School are still reeling from the traumatic event when they must return to school. Stacy, a trans senior, and the rest of the Queer Student Union, in conjunction with the marching band, have decided to put together a parade to register people to vote. When it becomes evident that the city does not want this event to take place, the members of the QSU must make the difficult decision to either cancel the event or do it anyway as an act of civil disobedience.
My Own Worst Enemy is a queer pop-punk musical about how we respond to and heal from violence. This has been a labor of love involving numerous up and coming trans performers and theater makers who we can’t even begin to thank enough. We believe that artists deserve to be compensated for their labor, and as such, we need all the help we can get to ensure these artists are paid and fed.
This is an all trans and nonbinary creative team, and a majority trans cast. When we held our first zoom reading and realized that there were more trans and nonbinary performers than there were cis performers, we knew right then and there that this was something special. This was a reality that so many of us had only dreamed of experiencing. We want to share this reality with the rest of the world because, my goodness, is it incredible.
