Help make students' cost of living and sustainability focused ideas happen!
After a successful first round, The Friendly Living Fund has recently relaunched for its second round.
The fund, a collaboration between YSJ's Student Union and The Living Lab, was set up to help students develop practical, impactful projects that address the cost-of-living crisis while building climate resilience. Individuals or groups can apply for up to £400.
The fund is open to all, and the process kept simple to be as accessible as possible. Decisions are also made by a student led-committee.
The first round supported ten amazing projects including:
- ‘The Period Project’ created by Gina who was struck by the rise in period poverty in the UK, and felt compelled to take action. The fund provided a platform to translate concern into impact, distributing free reusable period products to students on campus. Read interview with Gina here.
- Ruke from our London campus used her money to develop two different projects. Winterkind supports international students who struggle to afford proper winter clothing upon arriving in the UK. Vertifarm Project is working to establish a vertical rooftop farm at the London Campus’ Import Building, to grow micro legumes and vegetables.
- Emily created a composting scheme to motivate neighbours to commit to a composting routine.
- Bailee purchased a sewing machine and is hosting workshops for students to upcycle unwanted fabrics into fidget toys for people with ADHD, dementia or other conditions.

We are looking to build on these incredible first round projects and need extra funding to help make this happen. We have secured small pots, but to support as many students' ideas as possible we need your help.
We have ambitions to grow and develop! All money will be spent to fund student led projects, support students' development as social entrepreneurs, and help make an active change on campus and in the community.
How will Funds be Spent?
Any size of donations are more than welcome, from the smallest to the most generous, and all will be used to ensure the Friendly Living Fund's sustainability, and make amazing projects happen.
Thank you for supporting!!
