It saddens us to write this request on behalf of Shaquawn “Shaq” DeAngelo Mustin, husband, father, brother, friend, co-worker and caretaker. Shaq whose contagious sweet spirit inspires us all to be better people, lies paralyzed in the Huntsville hospital’s STICU.
Tragically on Thursday, October 10, 2019, while on his job, Shaq was struck by a falling 400 lbs storage tote of manufacturing parts. The tote of parts fell from greater than 10 feet striking Shaq in the head rending him immediately lifeless. His neck was broken instantly, and several discs were herniated. Fortunately, the equipment he was operating broke the fall and minimize the full impact. He was stabilized at the job site and then immediately transported for emergency care.
Following the required surgery he was conscious and breathing with assistance from a ventilator. A second surgery was required as his team of doctors recommended both a tracheostomy and the insertion of a feeding tube.
He is surrounded by his wife, family and friends who sit vigilantly by his side. As you can imagine Shaq’s full recovery is not guaranteed. This young vibrant 25-year-old person is now facing months or even years of suffering through painful rehabilitation. The family is working hard to pave the way to ensure that Shaq gets the best medical treatment and assistance available.
This young man had such a beautiful mind. A life that enriches others in his presence. Shaq always has a helping hand for anyone. He is an amazing father to his 2-year old daughter, Sa’Mia, husband and supporter to his wife SheLeah and a great friend! He loves to spend time with his family while working hard to provide for them. He loves to sing at the church, make music, play video games, to be of service to his extended family, and to eat his wife’s cooking and boy did he love to dance.
It was only a few years ago that his friends and family gathered to watch he and She’Leah exchange vows in a beautiful wedding in Alabama. Everyone wept as the young couple shared vows and Shaq later serenaded his bride with a song and his guitar. In that moment we imagined many happy decades of them creating a family and achieving their dreams. We celebrated their love with music and dancing.
Shaq is not only loved by his family and friends but by everyone. Shaq’s colleagues consistently describe him as the “nicest and kindest person.” Shaq was dedicated to his job and not afraid of hard work. He was a lead person on his job and the outpouring of love and concern after his accident was evident of his impact on the people that was around him.
While Shaq could not fully speak shortly after the accident he mustered the energy to whisper these words to his wife “I love you and I am sorry" Just another example of the kind of young man and young father he was; always thinking about others.
Let's think about Shaq.
We are asking our friends, family and the community at large to give generously to help this beautiful, young family with their current and future medical expenses, as well as to help to care for his wife and child during this tragic time. We want to ensure that Shaq receives the best care possible so that he can survive and fully recover. It is often quoted that the road to success is always under construction. Let’s help Shaq pave a new road to a successful recovery. Shaq will dance again with your help.
Thank you for your prayers, visits, and donations. We will keep you updated via this site as well as via Facebook.
