A photograph can hold an entire world of memories: a family gathering, the face of someone we love, a beloved pet, or a place we'll never forget.

For someone who is blind or has low vision, so much of that photograph may remain out of reach. Photos for the Blind is working to offer another way to experience it: through touch.

Our mission is to transform meaningful personal photographs into carefully designed, raised-relief 3D prints that can be explored with the hands—and eventually provide those prints free of charge to recipients.

This work draws on years of experience in 3D design, 3D printing, and tactile educational resources. The expertise behind the project includes thousands of completed 3D prints, detailed models of landscapes and objects, and work involving accessibility for the blind and low-vision community. We know that an effective tactile image takes more than simply raising the surface of a photograph. Shapes, depth, scale, and the details we choose to preserve all affect what someone can understand through touch.

The technical foundation is established. Applying it to personal photographs is the next step, and we want to do that carefully.

We're raising an initial $7,500 to develop and test the first tactile photograph prototypes. The funds will help cover printing materials and supplies, design experiments, feedback and testing with blind and low-vision participants, and the practical systems needed for accessible photo requests, packaging, and shipping.

Our first milestone is to create physical examples, learn from the people who will actually use them, and refine a reliable production process. We aren't accepting requests for free prints yet; this campaign is helping us build toward that service.

Imagine someone being able to trace the shape of a cherished dog, explore the features of a favorite landscape, or hold a tactile representation of a family photograph. That is the possibility we're working toward.

If you can contribute, thank you. Sharing this campaign, or connecting us with people experienced in tactile accessibility who might offer feedback, is also a meaningful way to help.
