Hi Makhi Brasfield & WE MADE LEMONADE!

Hey everyone, my name is Makhi Brasfield, age 25. I’m here for a blessing to get my car fixed and graduate in 2025. I am at a dead end in terms of having a hold on my account to graduate in May, not being able to get a co-signer for a student loan, and not having the means to fix my 2004 Honda Accord.
Since I cannot get a student loan, I am coming to you guys for your understanding and help. Besides my lovely Granny, I am a first-generation college student from Arco County; Stuttgart, and Dewitt, Arkansas, where only very few individuals dream of making a mark on this world or even have the chance to.
I’m grateful for my upbringing, love, and family, but finding my way has been a trail. I was raised in a middle-class home by a strong single mother striving to do better than where she came from. She, my Brother, and I lived paycheck to paycheck. However, through her prayers, we never missed a meal, and the lights never got shut off.
Through my younger years, I didn’t have the mindset to set goals and dream about the future until after high school in 2018. However, after making a 14 & 16 on the ACT, my best bet was to go to community college (Shout out, PCCUA). I graduated in 2020 and transferred to the University of Arkansas with a transfer scholarship.
Once here, I switched my major three times: Communications, Fine Arts, then to Apparel Merchandise and Product Development. This major is where I found my passion and purpose. My eyes opened to a new world of possibilities; I began to dream.
After finding this major because of financial reasons, I withdrew from all my classes twice, and for the second time, I left Fayetteville to go back home to Stuttgart. My love for fashion and education still burned in me, and for those six months, I never felt so defeated. Sewing garments, up-cycling, and reading about fashion history has given me a sense of being.
Fortunately, I was able to pick up where I left off at the beginning of 2024, sacrificing my privacy by living in dorms. I feel that whatever it takes, I will conquer this goal, and I’m grateful to be able to qualify for student housing.
Jim Carrey says, "If you're not willing to downgrade your lifestyle for a year to have a lifestyle you want forever, you care too much about what other people think."
During the summer, my car breaks down. It runs hot, has a major oil leak, and has many other issues worth $2,937. I am blessed to have the transportation that Fayetteville provides and a Shout out to Veo Scooter; you have been a lifesaver. However, I would love to get back on the road to allow myself to take advantage of more opportunities.
Then recently, Life threw another lemon. A semester and two summer classes in, having another financial wall of $3,306. A hold on my account of $3,131, restricting me from applying to classes next semester & graduating in May 2025, along with a $175 cost to apply for graduation.
So, I’m here asking for you to help me make lemonade. Help me join the 5.3% of black students who can say, “ I graduated from the University of Arkansas!”
I thank you for your time, love, and care.
