At age 25, I was diagnosed with a rare form of progressive hearing loss that is genetic, and unfortunately, it’s gotten to the point where I need hearing aids. Phone calls and facetime are no longer easy ways for me to stay connected with friends and family, instead feeling like cryptic messages for me to painstakingly decipher. In-person conversations aren’t much better, with me having to ask others to repeat themselves constantly. I started to feel hopeful for once after learning that hearing aids meant that this doesn’t necessarily have to be my new normal, only to discover that insurance would not cover the cost. I was shocked to learn that most insurances still do not consider it a “medical necessity” regardless of the cause (thank you American healthcare system ) That’s why I’m reaching out to you, my community, for help. I firmly believe that hearing aids shouldn’t be considered a luxury, despite their luxury prices. They are a medical necessity that would allow me to stay connected with others, and rediscover simple joys like listening to music, going to the movies, and heartwarming conversations with friends and loved ones.
