Help Make A Passionate Board Game Maker's Dream Come True
Donation protected
My name is Daniel Johnson and I'm a college student studying Computer Science at Brigham Young University.
When I was in elementary school I loved to use little index cards to create card games, I would even use multiple layers of paper to create boards for my games. Eventually I wanted my games to look more official than my pencil doodles on index cards. I started creating little card graphics on the computer and I would print them out on cardstock pieces of paper.
It has always been my dream to get one of my games properly printed and I am SO CLOSE to doing so.
I just have one obstacle, funding.
Getting my game printed is going to end up costing a little over one hundred dollars, and as a college student I can not justify spending that amount of money right now.
Please, allow me to introduce the game your donation will help me realize and prototype:
The game's name is Tread, I named it this way because the game is about creating a pathway for yourself to tread, but also because I believe that having the name of my game be one word long will allow it to be easier to recognize.
Tread is a 2-6 player game that I estimate will take 10-25 minutes to complete.
The game is played on a large 18in x 18in hexagon board that is made up of smaller hexagon path tiles that can be rotated and rearranged to build a path, home tiles that represent the starting positions of each of the players, and the crown tile which represents the tile you must race to.
At the very start of the game, the players take turns placing tiles to build the board. During this phase of the game, it is recommended to try and stop any other players from fully connecting to the crown, while trying to connect to the crown yourself.
As you may have infered, the aim of the game is to rearrange the path tiles in order to create a pathway that you can move along from your starting tile to the crown. The first player to make it to the crown wins!
The Cards:
There are 4 types of cards in this game!
All of the art for this game is made by me!
Action Cards:
Action cards are the main way to interact with your character and the board. Unlike the other cards, you are only able to use one action card per turn!
Shown below are 4 out of 6 of the action cards!
- Move: This is the primary way to move you character piece! You use this to move your character to a connecting tile.
- Force Move: This is one of the many ways to sabotage your opponents! Move them to a tile that puts them further away from the crown!
- Rotate: This is the primary way you interact with the tiles of the board! Rotate the tiles so that your pathway can connect to the crown!
- Swap Tiles: Is another, slightly rarer, way to interact with the board. This card lets you swap two tiles that are on the board so that you can pick a tile that connects with your path better, while also sabotaging another player's path.
Utility Cards:
Utility cards are special cards that you play before you play an action card!
You can play as many Utility cards as you want on your turn!
Shown below are 4 of the 8 total Utility cards:
- Inspiration: This card lets you draw more cards so that you have more options on your turn!
- Double: This card lets you double the effects of the next action card you play! That means if you play a move card after a double, you'll be able to move twice!
- Steal: This card lets you take a card from another player without looking at their hand! If you think another player might have a rare card that could stop you from winning, you might want to try to steal it!
- Swap Hands: This card is a rare card that lets you swap your entire hand with another player!
Interruption Cards:
These cards are super special: they can be played at any time!
- Deny: This card lets you stop another player from playing any card! If someone is trying to play a card that will cause them to win, deny it!
- Scavenge: This card lets you take the top card from the discard pile! If another player uses a card that you really like, scavenge it!
- Mimic: This card lets you mimic the action of another player. This card can be very important for getting ahead! If another player is moving, mimic it!
Rule Cards:
These cards change the game!
There are two types of rule cards, personal and game rules.
Personal rules only affect the player who drew them, but game rules affect everyone!
There are 60 different rule cards! Each game will be different!
- Rule Shift: is the way you recieve new rules. As soon as you draw this card, you must draw a rule card.
What are my plans for this game?
Well first and foremost I need a prototype. That's what this funding is for. I need to be able to have the game physically in my hands to know what I need to change and adjust.
Some day in the future I would absolutely love to start producing and selling this game, but I can't think about that until I get this funded.
How would your donations be used?
Your donations would directly fund the printing of the first ever game of Tread.
The game requires:
75 Hexagon Tiles,
180 Cards ,
7 Character Pieces,
and a Box with inserts.
The Tiles will end up costing 65$,
The Cards will be 42$,
The Character pieces will be 2.55$,
A custom printed Box will end up being 19$.
And the shipping price is 30$.
So please, help me fund one of my dreams. I am so close and I don't want to give up on this game!
