Hey everyone, have you ever met a dog with a more fitting name than Major? This retired Police Service Dog was, well, a MAJOR success. Seriously, this canine hero wasn't just chasing squirrels and racoons; he was making headlines and history. Major was the incredible PSD who sniffed out the remains of Bruce McArthur’s eight victims, providing crucial evidence that put a very bad guy behind bars for a very, very long time. He's officially among the elite – a four-legged legend who made our streets safer. Born in Holland and serving the Toronto Police Service for an impressive (and frankly, a bit ridiculous for a dog with his track record) 8 years, Major truly lived up to his name. Even with a few health hiccups along the way, he was a dedicated public servant.
Now, in his well-deserved retirement, Major has been enjoying some delightful role-reversal: training his human to provide treats and belly rubs on command. He's a master of the "sit-and-drool-by-the-treat-cupboard-until-someone-gets-a-mop" technique, and his "please-give-me-a-hug-and-belly-rub" grin is legendary (though it does tend to scare off the faint of heart). Major is even the first Toronto Police Service Retired PSD to join the Ned's Wish family, and we're all dedicated to ensuring his retirement is nothing short of awesome.
Unfortunately, Major's awesome retirement plans hit a snag. A few days ago, our hero was living his best life, in hot pursuit of a nefarious rabbit (we assume it was a master criminal in disguise). He was having a blast, wind in his fur, tail wagging… until he came up lame. You know that feeling when you're super excited about something, and then BAM, reality hits? Yeah, Major experienced that, canine-style.
Turns out, our furry detective has a torn cruciate ligament – basically, a doggy ACL injury. If you've ever had ACL surgery, you know it's no walk in the park. And for Major, it means he's about to embark on a journey that will make him feel like he's back at police academy, but this time, it's all about rehab!
He's scheduled for a fancy-schmancy TPLO surgery with a board-certified surgeon. This procedure requires specialized skills and tools, so you can imagine the price tag. After that, it's weeks of intense physiotherapy. His human will be trading in his regular human duties for "Major's personal trainer" status, working on rebuilding his range of motion, muscle strength, and even his core! That's right, even dogs need to hit the gym sometimes (though Major's gym sessions might involve more treat rewards and less grunting).
We're hoping to raise funds to cover Major's surgery, post-operative care, and all those physiotherapy sessions that will get him back to chasing imaginary rabbits (and real ones, if he's feeling frisky) in no time. Major has given so much to our community, dedicating his life to keeping us safe. Now, it's our turn to help him get back on all four paws and enjoy the retirement he so richly deserves.
Every dollar helps! Let's get Major back to his treat-demanding, belly-rub-enticing, "Major grin" self. And let's help his human avoid a life of instant noodles trying to pay for all this!
Thank you for your support, and remember, a healthy Major is a happy Major… and a happy Major means more slobbery kisses (and maybe a little less drool by the treat cupboard).
