Help Majok Marier finish his house in South Sudan
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Estelle Ford-Williamson, and I'm helping raise private donations to help Majok Marier, a former Lost Boy of South Sudan who has raised funds for clean water wells for eight villages in his country, to finish his home for his family members in South Sudan. Majok and I co-wrote Seed of South Sudan: Memoir of a "Lost Boy" Refugee and then in 2013 we began Wells for Hope for South Sudan to build water wells in the rural villages east of Rumbek near Majok's home. Usually just gathering water every day requires a woman to walk 4-6 miles one way, plus hours of waiting for a turn at a well. For 23 years, Majok has worked around the Atlanta area, most of those for a plumbing company, where he's a plumber's assistant. For 10 years, he has also raised funds and spoken to schoolchildren, teenagers, and adults about his journey and about conditions in villages in the world's newest country. At the same time, he has supported not only his own family in South Sudan--his mother, his wife, and his five children--but he has also supported his late sister's six children. Lela, his sister, died of a miscarriage in her village in 2013, and Majok with his mother's help has supported them since that time. Four are left at home now, and Majok provides housing for them all--12 people counting himself when he is there for long stays every couple of years. So while he is in South Sudan now, we want to help him complete the home he has been building for them. Mud huts are the norm, and these soak up rainfall and become infested with mosquitos in no time, bringing on persistent malaria. We hope that after his investment of thousands of dollars already in building most of this brick house, we will help him with the $3,200 needed to install windows and doors, finally sealing his family from the deadly malaria that affects all of them, year-round, all seasons.
