My dear friend and neighbor of 15+ years, Maija, is in financial hardship due to the recent destruction and abuse to her family home from her ex-tenants. Due to Covid19 restrictions, she could not evict tenants for safety violations nor for non-payment of rent. With no rental income coming in, she kept up with her mortgage payments but has now depleted her savings to keep up with the payments as best she could. It took Maija 4+ months to remove ex-tenants but by then the damage was done. This family of five, to include 3 children, essentially lived rent free for 4 months and did over $15,000 in damage.
Maija’s home is a duplex. She currently lives in the front and rents out the back. She is disabled and receives a small monthly disability check so her rental is her main source of income to survive on. Maija bought her home in 1993 and raised her 3 children there and would like to repair the home so that hopefully it will still be a place where her grandchildren can come to visit. Being disabled, it is a challenge for her to do strenuous jobs to repair the home herself.
Due to neglect, destruction and roach infestation, Maija had to dispose of her refrigerator, gas stove, range hood, toilet and dryer. All were beyond repair or salvage. The carpeting and padding in all three bedrooms had to be ripped out and disposed of as it was way beyond saving. The carpet and wood flooring were only 2.5 years old.
The below photos and video depict how disgusting and nasty the tenants left the property. Imagine an episode from ‘Hoarders’ with a massive German cockroach infestation.

In February, $3000 was spent on hauling, gutting and cleaning the house. Her cleaning company (On Time Yard and Cleaning Services, Ocean View, HI) did a brave and fabulous job removing all the rubbish, appliances, carpet, doors, shelving etc. all the while fighting against roaches crawling all over them. Every inch was cleaned and walls/ceiling were TSP’ed in preparation for future painting which must be done to rid of roach smell and stains that would not come out.
Money has already been spent on a professional pest control company (Smart Pest Control Solutions) in early March 2021, but it will require a least an additional month of treatment before anything can be brought back into the home due to the massive roach infestation.
Now for what this GoFundMe will assist with:
Maija is in need of the following before she can rent the other half of her home:
*Refrigerator
*Gas stove
*Range hood
*Toilet
*Dryer
*Kilz paint to paint raw wood and seal in roach smell
*Paint and labor to re-paint interior due to cigarette and roach smell plus stains
*Parts and labor for a plumber to fix bathroom and kitchen
*Material and labor for drywall repair
*Repair and labor to fix bathroom floor/wall from toilet leak
She will eventually need labor to move her and her furniture back in once complete.
The below photos are after the cleaning crew removed all debris and first wave of cleaning.

Maija’s ex-tenants drained her of her savings. She is now in danger of losing her home due to the bank moratoriums ending June 30th, 2021. She needs to make repairs to make the home habitable again in order to be able to rent out the other part of her home and start paying her mortgage again.
Maija is a cherished and respected neighbor to all who live near her. She would give anyone the shirt off her back if needed. Please help donate to this wonderful lady so she can once again rent her home and not be in fear of losing it. In advance, thank you so much for your generosity.
