On one unfortunate day, when she was only 7 years old, a car ran into her in a road accident, leaving her paralysed from the neck down due to a severe spinal cord injury. As the world around her seemed to be completely destroyed, fate dealt her another cruel blow: she learned that her beloved younger sister had tragically lost her life in the same accident, leaving her to face the challenges ahead alone.
Lying in the hospital bed, Mahnoor battled with her own body. Days turned into weeks, and she remained sick and with a lack of sensations in her body, her world turned upside down.
Doctors delivered the heartbreaking news to her parents that their daughter would never regain movement in her entire body. But, within the depths of Mahnoor's stubborn spirit burned an unwavering flame of determination. Refusing to accept the doctor's prognosis as her destiny, With every ounce of willpower, Mahnoor began her miraculous fight back to life. Weeks turned into months as she tirelessly pushed herself, defying the odds. Slowly, against all expectations, she began to regain control over her arms and neck.
In a place where there were less facilities and accessibility issues for differently-abled, Mahnoor’s journey took an even more challenging turn as a girl with a disability from a lower middle-class family.
Due to limited facilities for differently-abled children, it was hard for Mahnoor to fit in the current educational environment. Despite these discouraging challenges, as she pursued her high school, Mahnoor found herself totally isolated. In the grooming age when all her classmates were exploring life's joys and adventures, because of the circumstances.
Mahnoor’s journey took yet another challenging turn as she decided to join college, a decade after her life-altering accident.
However, her struggles did not end there. In college, Mahnoor faced neglect from co-curricular activities due to her disability, as her classmates and the college administration failed to provide her with equal opportunities to participate and engage in extracurricular events.Despite the hurdles she faced, Mahnoor remained determined to stick to her path.
In the face of financial instability and her father's unemployment, Mahnoor’s parents supported her dream of completing college. After completing her college education, she wished to start a job to be an independent individual but, unfortunately, her process was defaced by a progression of refusals, as many firms succumbed to disability discrimination.
Till date, Mahnoor is still struggling and surviving through cultural biases, financial instability and traditions keeping her away to live a safe, unchallenged and successful life.
What could help her now?
It would be better if she moved to a foreign country where she will have more opportunities to grow limitlessly, where there is a welcoming environment that embraces her without discrimination.
Now we want her to pursue Masters abroad in Business Administration.
This decision for Mahnoor to pursue specialisation in Business Administration abroad will open numerous opportunities for her.
Since, many international universities offer strong support systems and facilities to accommodate students with disabilities, fostering an inclusive and accessible learning environment.
