As many of you have already heard, Maggie’s mom, Wendy, passed away recently. Wendy did not have life insurance and left no savings. Maggie is the only child with no other family in the area and is now burdened with the costs of funerary expenses and legal fees. Wendy was handicapped and on a fixed income and did not maintain her house well. Maggie is planning on moving into the house while she makes necessary repairs rather than paying the mortgage in addition to her own apartment rent while she works on the property. She really wants to keep the house, but that may not be possible because of the amount of credit card debt left behind by her mother. The house needs a lot of TLC before it can be considered marketable if it comes down to a sale, which will require substantial upfront out-of-pocket expenses for Maggie.
I’m sure a lot of you know that Maggie has had a tough few years and could really use a break. I’m hoping that we can pool some cold, hard cash to help her with ALL the things!
Money raised will be used for the following:
- At the time of Wendy’s death, she had over $10,000 of credit card debt. That debt must be paid in order for Maggie to keep her mom’s house. It is still unknown if Wendy’s insurance will cover the entirety of her final medical expenses.
- Memorial services and inurnment costs.
- Attorney’s fees and other legal costs.
- Caring for Wendy’s two senior cats. One of them, Meow, (yes, that’s his real name) is visually impaired.
- Home renovations to make the house livable, or more appealing to potential buyers if a sale is forced by the credit card companies.
- Dumpster rental and waste disposal/hauling fees. All flooring in the house must be ripped out and replaced, walls repaired, and damaged property hauled out due to pet damage, water damage, and interior damage done by various individuals who took advantage of Wendy’s handicapped situation over the years.
All of these responsibilities have suddenly fallen directly into Maggie’s lap. With no family in the area to help, Maggie spends all of her free time cleaning, renovating, and preparing her mother’s possessions for sale to try to pay off some of the debt left behind. Maggie is the type of person that would do anything for her friends while bringing her own flare and sass to the situation. Her sense of humor can make anyone laugh and she’s trying to keep it up, but this overwhelming situation has left her worried about finances 24/7 and she is already physically and mentally exhausted with many months left to go.
