Help Maggie & Miguel Save Luis

Hi, My names Laura and I am fundraising money for my dearest friend and coworker Maggie and her husband Miguel who are getting married this summer - a time that should be full of joy, love, and celebration...
But just as they were planning their big day, an unexpected challenge arrived in the form of a sweet, gentle soul named Luis - their newly adopted dog from Niagara Dog Rescue. Despite Maggie being a consistent foster dog mom, she could have never planned what came next.
Luis arrived from Korea on April 17th, 2025, after spending time in foster care and undergoing vetting overseas. Maggie and Miguel fell in love with him instantly, welcoming him into their home with open arms and hearts. On May 16th, they took him for his first-ever groom and vet visit here in Toronto - starting his new life with love and care.
But things quickly changed.
What Happened:
• On May 27th, Luis woke up limping on his right hind leg. Hoping it would improve, they monitored him closely.
• By May 31st, he was still struggling, so they rushed him to the vet. X-rays showed no fracture but suggested possible hip dysplasia.
• On June 11th, a different vet saw signs of a femoral head fracture — a painful condition — and referred them to an orthopedic surgeon.
• On June 16th, a CT scan confirmed it: Luis needs FHO surgery (femoral head ostectomy) to relieve his pain and help him walk again.
The Cost of Saving Luis:
They never expected this kind of expense, especially while planning a wedding!!! So far, the vet costs have added up to:
• May 31: $1,088.19
• June 11: $257.67
• June 16: $1,660.86
• Total so far: $3,006.72 paid by the couple.
The surgery alone is estimated at $7,000+, plus another $1,000+ for post-op care and physical therapy.
They’ve received an incredibly generous offer from the Korean partner shelter: they’ll contribute $3,000 toward surgery if Maggie and Miguel keep Luis — otherwise, Luis would have to return to Korea and back into shelter care. Something Maggie would never want to do!
But Luis is already home. He knows safety, love, and family for the first time in his life. Giving him up now would break their hearts.
How You Can Help:
Let’s rally around this couple who has given so much to others. Maggie is the kind of friend who shows up — loving, community-oriented, and endlessly generous. Maggie contributes so much in Women’s Support Housing where she works!
Now it’s our turn.
Any amount helps — whether it’s $5, $50, or simply sharing this post. Together, we can help cover Luis’s surgery and give him the pain-free, joyful life he deserves.
Let’s help Maggie and Miguel start this new chapter — wedding, marriage, and their family with Luis — without the burden of impossible vet bills.
Thank you for your love, generosity, and support.
