Hi family and friends,

First, I would like to thank all of you for supporting my medical school journey starting with my pre-med years. With you having already supported me thus far, it is hard for me to reach out for help once again. I have been resourceful and resilient while covering my medical school application fees but I am in need of your assistance to cover some of my medical school fees for this upcoming academic year (I’m going to medschool YAY!).

My name is Maedot Haymete. I finished high school at the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa and then attended Amherst College in the US. I graduated with a BA in Biology and Mathematics (double major) and completed both majors with distinction. I was also inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa academic honors society during graduation week for my outstanding academic achievement.

Having been premed my entire time at Amherst College, I had hopes to apply to medical school but struggled to cover my application fees while also finalizing my immigration case to the United States. I will now finally attend Virginia Tech Carilion where I have repeatedly negotiated my financial aid and found additional financial resources. I am currently responsible for covering $70,000 over 4-years and I need your help to raise $7,500 to cover expenses related to my first year of medical school.

Last year, I was able to find resources to cover my application fees to 27 medical schools. I was admitted into 10 medical schools including Brown University, Georgetown University, Case Western Reserve University, University of Miami, University of Rochester, Virginia Tech Carilion, University of Maryland, Rush Medical College... With medical school being one of the most expensive graduate school programs, several of my acceptance offers included $200,000-$300,000 loan packages for the 4-year program. I made the financially responsible decision and committed to Virginia Tech Carilion after negotiating a more competitive aid package.

Your contributions, no matter the size, will allow me to attend to my medical studies with less financial burden. I hope to use my medical education to continuously learn about, work with and advocate for people from vulnerable communities.
