Hi my name is Fiona, and our family is fundraising for medical, travel and living expenses for my sister Madeleine, who has rare persistent primary mediastinal B-cell Lymphoma.
In March 2021, Madeleine, age 23, was first diagnosed with lymphoma after they found a 10cmx15cm tumor in her chest cavity. She went through 6 rounds of chemo, finishing in July. The doctors were confident that this would cure her, but her final scan showed that cancer was already returning, which is extremely rare. Madeleine has been working as a PhD graduate student at Michigan State University with plans to do research in economics and education. She will now need to take a leave of absence to restart treatment. Her doctor in Michigan referred her to the Mayo Clinic in order to get the most knowledgeable eyes on her case and give her the
best chance to eliminate the cancer and get back to living her life.
Starting in January, Madeleine will go through two more rounds of chemo in East Lansing, Michigan and then will transfer to the Mayo Clinic to complete 6-8 weeks of stem cell transplant (an advanced type of bone marrow transplant). We are grateful that Madeleine is able to be treated by the leading researchers in this type of lymphoma at the Mayo clinic, but it will be costly. There will be many expenses: traveling to and staying in Minnesota, living expenses that won't be covered since Madeleine has lost most of her income from taking a pause on her PhD, and the additional medical costs not covered by insurance. I will also be leaving my job in order to accompany her for the duration of her treatment as a caregiver and companion. It will be a huge help to receive financial help during this time, so we can focus on getting Madeleine back to full health.
