Hello! I am Madelaine Elam and I am an Urban Planning undergraduate student with a minor in sustainability. I plan to focus on sustainability for my career after graduation, so I believe that this is an amazing opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge and experience.
The trip will be from May 22nd to June 9th (about two and a half weeks). We will visit 3 countries and 4 European cities of different sizes that are all known for their sustainability efforts and showcase sustainability in different ways.
- We start in Zurich, Switzerland, a mid-size city that regularly ranks at the top for sustainability worldwide.
- We then take the train to Freiburg, Germany, a small city that is famous for its holistic approach to sustainability, including eco-districts.
- We then take the train to Berlin, a large European capital that has seen a lot of development since the end of the Cold War and has an impressive public transportation system.
- Finally, we take the train to Prague, Czech Rep., one of the best-preserved historic cities in Europe. There we will see how a city adapts over time while preserving its past.
The trip will focus on sustainability broadly, including buildings, planning, transportation, history/culture, food, quality of life, climate action planning, infrastructure, walkability, green space, etc.
