Help Maddy get to Cambridge to study her Master's

Donation protected

My name is Madeleine Snook, I'm 25 years of age, and I live on the Central Coast in NSW, Australia. As of June 2021, I've been made a conditional offer to undertake my MPhil in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics by Thesis at the University of Cambridge in the UK. As an aspiring linguistics professor with a first class Honours degree in Linguistics and Celtic Studies from the University of Sydney, this is a huge opportunity for me to progress and achieve my dream. This offer will mean so much for my future career and my life to be able to secure a Master's degree from this prestigious university.

However, one of the conditions of my offer stipulates that I must demonstrate I am able to afford the costs of tuition and living at Cambridge for 1 year. While I have worked in various jobs and saved for years, my life savings of $50,000 at the moment still do not suffice. My chances for earning full-time money were also cut short in 2020 as an English teacher in South Korea by both the pandemic and abuses of workers' rights by my management, forcing me to come back to Australia (with the hefty $3000 AUD cost of quarantine in tow) in 2021 after just 1 year of work.

It was during the hectic and uncertain time of late 2020 and early 2021 that I had what little presence of mind, energy and time during working full-time in South Korea to construct a thesis proposal and application for two universities. While I had thought I had submitted my application in time to be considered for scholarships, I found out devastatingly that I was too late and I would not be considered for any funding. Nevertheless, I submitted my application and was offered a position at Cambridge. The offer conditions guidelines presented this table of expected expenses for my year, at a minimum:

£ 350.00 Non-UK Settling in Supp
£ 11,123.00 Student Maintenance
£ 27,516.00 UCF Overseas/Islands

This comes to a total minimum amount of 38,989 Pounds Sterling, which converts to $71,371.35 AUD. As this is $21,1371 greater than my life savings, I am asking for help now to reach this minimum in 3 months before the term begins on October 1st.

As my entire life savings will be wiped and both my family and I will be left in financial ruin if left to come up with this money alone, I will be very grateful if anyone could help us reach this goal with however little they could give.

With your support, I will be able to freely continue my studies researching the semantics and perception of colour terms in Scottish Gaelic (a critically endangered language), English and Korean. I promise you I will not my fail my course, as I have succeeded quite well in my academic life so far:

- University of Sydney Dalyell Mentor (2018)
- Award: Dean’s List of Excellence in Academic Performance (2018), University of Sydney.
- Award: The Appen Butler Hill Prize for Excellence in Linguistics (2017), University of Sydney.
- Scholarship: The GS Caird Scholarship in Linguistics III for outstanding achievement in Linguistics (2017), University of Sydney.
- Scholarship: The Rosemary Samios Awards in Scottish Gaelic Studies (SC1997), University of Sydney, two-time recipient (2017, 2018).
- Scholarship: International Exchange Outbound Scholarship (SC0719), University of Sydney (2016).
- Award: The Helen B Devine Bequest Prize in Old English/Anglo-Saxon Studies (PR0302), University of Sydney (2016).
- Award: The University of Sydney Academic Merit Prize (PR1278) (2015).
- Award: The Betty Eva Naish Prize for Celtic Studies (PR1292), University of Sydney (2015).
- Golden Key Honour Society member (high academic achievement- University of British Columbia, Canada, 2014).

Your support would mean the world to me and my family, and I would be eternally grateful for any donations to help.
