I'm Alina, and I'm raising funds for my "fospice" dog, Maddie, to see a cardiologist so she can get the best possible treatment for her heart.
In November 2024, Maddie was surrendered to the shelter by her previous owner, emaciated at 35 pounds, with heart worm disease, and clearly having had many litters of puppies.
By December 2024, Maddie was on the euthanasia list at the shelter. A rescue organization saved her from euthanasia, and I began fostering Maddie for that rescue group.
As my foster dog from December 2024 to March 2025, Maddie got to a healthy weight of 65 pounds, and learned the ways of a happy family dog: going on walks, watching TV, enjoying healthy meals and treats, and playing with toys. During this time, she also got spayed and underwent heart worm treatment.
In mid-March, Maddie began to experience labored breathing and retained fluid in her abdomen. She was rushed to the vet, who diagnosed her with congestive heart failure. Because congestive heart failure is a lifelong medical condition, the rescue determined that the best option for Maddie would be to stay with a known and approved foster. I quickly agreed to become Maddie's "fospice" mom, meaning I will provide her with a loving home for however long she has. It's difficult to know how long that is, but after years of severe neglect, Maddie deserves to enjoy the happy family dog life for as long as possible.
Maddie has responded well to the medication, although she still needs about 3x what would be considered a "maintenance" dose. For this reason and as a best practice with heart conditions, Maddie needs to see a specialist - a cardiologist, who will work with Maddie's day-to-day vet to establish a plan for going forward.
The cardiology visit is expected to cost $888, which will include an exam, electrocardiogram, and echocardiogram. If updated x-rays are ordered (which is very likely), these will cost an additional $300-400. Any amount will go directly toward Maddie's care, and I will share the itemized bill from the cardiologist after her appointment on May 12. Thank you for reading and for supporting and/or sharing Maddie's fundraiser!
