We could have never imagined our Grand Canyon hiking trip would have ended so soon for Maddie. My sister Maddie exprienced a serious accident as a result from severe heat stroke, that is going to lead to months of therapies and hospital visits. Maddie collapsed during a strenuous downhill section of the hike, and for 2 hours, my family and I tended to her with every fighting ounce in our bodies; hiking up and down with water in the blazing sun, running around trying to get ahold of satellite SOS systems, building shady forts, and keeping her awake. She had fallen, hit her head, and went in and out of consciousness for the entire 2 hours. Eventually, the amazing SAR team was able to find us and lift her out via helicopter, and Maddie was airlifted out of the Canyon- where she is now being treated in the Saint Geroge Utah hospital. Maddie has gone through so much. She has been diagnosed with Rhabdomyolysis, DIC, and is battling severe Kidney and Liver failure. She has endured 2 fibrenogen transfusions, 1 platelet transfusion, a anticoagulant infusion treatment and spinal tap (that is only the beginning). She suffers from many scrapes and many 2nd degree wide burns and blisters.
We have been blessed and are so grateful for how amazing the staff is, and what they have done for Maddie, as they continue to do everything to keep her safe and recovering. Even with the help of insurance- we will owe over $30,000 of medical bills out of pocket (and that is also because of the 3 helicopter rides it took to get her to safety put of the Canyon).
Maddie has a very long and hard road to recovery ahead of her. The future is uncertain, and everyday- we are finding out new things that require treatment. Any support is appreciated as we navigate through this chapter of her life
We are beyond grateful for all the prayers, love, and miracles to come. ♥️
