I'm Maddie's mom, Katie. Most of you already know me and have followed Maddie's story on Facebook page, Maddie's Journey. If you're new to our journey, My 15-year-old daughter, Maddison, was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia just over 7 months ago. She's my second oldest of four kids and my only daughter. October 4, 2021 is a day we cannot forget. Within a week, we went from believing she had a pesky ear infection to finding out she had Moderate Risk T-Cell ALL. She initially spent 3 weeks in-patient at St. Louis Children's Hospital receiving chemotherapy and addressing a stage 3 Acute Kidney Injury she incurred due to the T-ALL diagnosis. I was away from my then 6-month-old baby and 8-year-old son during this time. I was also unable to return to work for the entire month of October. After those first 4 weeks, I returned to work to continue receiving regular paychecks. I was still regularly taking Maddie to the hospital every week. Sometimes we'd be at Children's multiple times throughout the week. I've lost count of the number of appointments. Every hour away from work meant an hour unpaid. My parents stepped in to assist when they were able, especially Maddie's grandpa. I am writing all this because I've always tried to be open and transparent about our situation. We've hit a point where I have already run out of my PTO for the year when it is only May. Maddie is still receiving weekly chemotherapy and attending physical therapy. This translates to 16-20 hours every paycheck I will be taking unpaid. That is over a $500/month shortage. It also means I have less time to earn a commission in the office, leading to additional potential loss in pay. I pride myself on being independent and managing on my own or with the help of my immediate family. Those closest know how hard it is for me to ask for help. At this point, I've realized I cannot continue on my own. Please know all donations we've received in the past have gone towards Maddie somehow. Either for her medical bills, travel expenses, her MANY food cravings thanks to steroids, or comfort items to aid her. This fundraiser helps offset the loss of pay and puts aside money for future hospital stays, bills, etc. We love and appreciate each and every one of you. Please don't forget to follow Maddie's Journey on Facebook for regular updates.
