M immigrated to the US the past January from Afghanistan on a Special Immigrant Visa. For years, he risked his life, and the lives of his family, to help our military and humanitarian organizations with translation and other services. Finally, he was granted an SIV and moved to Chicago with his wife and baby. M borrowed money from a friend to buy a car, and it was just totaled by a tree as a result of the tornado that blew through the city. M risked SO much to get here, he did everything right, and provided so much to keep our service men and women safe - and I hate seeing bad things happen to good people, especially during these awful times. Like many SIV recipients, he works on the gig economy, so this has been an especially horrible time for he and his family. I'm working together with the Refugee Community Connection in Chicago to help M fund some new wheels.
