Hi . My name is Lorie and I am fundraising to help my friend Lynn Helwig to live her best life and walk again. She's a lifelong Kitchener, On resident.
After more than 3 years of pain and grueling treatments on her left leg, Lynn was facing serious decision making. After months of increasingly more desperate medical treatments she was given the devastating Christmas gift that her leg needed to be amputated immediately to stop infection from surging through her body. This life saving amputation resulted in her needing an advanced prosthetic leg with two joints to replace what she lost to the surgeon's knife, allowing her to continue climbing stairs, walking and generally living life.
Unfortunately, in Canada, due to apparent budget constraints newer more effective technologies are discouraged from meaningful government funding. Amputees are encouraged to choose less dynamic replacement limbs, some of which have been developed decades ago, certainly not able to cope with today's world's needs. Lynn's new dual joint leg with current available technology, allowing her to mostly resume her lifestyle could cost her $70,000 out of her pocket. When you add in other needed mobility aids, such as canes, crutches, and walkers, the costs are even more staggering. Even with her steady employment in a customer service position, this much needed prosthetic at this cost remains out of reach.
Please help if you are able. She has always been self reliant and active. This has slowed her down but she's not out. She's hoping for a hand up... and a chance to walk again.
Could you share this message for her too?
