Help Lyn: A mother's struggle against Cancer.

No one is ever prepared to hear the words ‘you have cancer’. And in that moment, Lyn’s world was turned upside down.

The Diagnosis

Three weeks ago, on what she thought was a routine blood check, Lyn was told that she has Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML); an aggressive cancer of the blood and bone marrow with a 40-60% survival rate for adults under 60.

The Treatment

On top of this, an existing weak immune system (neutropenia) means that she is at high risk of infections and cannot receive the usual chemotherapy treatment that people in her position would get. Instead, she is relying on a weaker form of chemotherapy (VEN + AZA for those who know what that is) and a new trial drug (TAG).

Since she is in the high risk category, she has to stay in hospital, will not be able to go home for at least 6 weeks, with the possibility of being there for longer. Even in the best case scenario, she will be unable to return to work for the foreseeable future, while she focuses on treatment, recovery, and healing.

The Effects

This has turned her life upside down. She is now navigating an incredibly challenging journey of intensive treatment, and the unexpected diagnosis means that there is extreme financial strain on her.

While Lyn fights with everything she has, the reality of everyday expenses like rent and bills continue to roll-in while she lay in her hospital bed. And the medical costs are just beginning.

Lyn is one of the most kind-hearted and selfless people you could ever meet, dedicating her life to helping others as a nurse in aged care and disability support. She is always the first to show up for others, offer support, and give her time and love so freely. Now, it’s our turn to show up for her.

While her family: kids, grandkids, husband, and relatives, are providing the best financial support that we can, we can simply not do it by ourselves.
