Luna walked in from turnout on Tuesday, December 2nd, just like any other day. She came in from the field with her 'girlfriends' and settled into her stall for dinner. A few hours later, when I pulled Luna out of her stall, I was horrified to see she wasn’t using her back right leg. There was no heat, swelling, or obvious injury, but the pain was so severe that the vet came right away. Luna could put some weight on her leg and walk, but she wouldn’t fully bear weight on it. Despite multiple vet visits, therapies, and tests, we still don’t know what’s wrong. She’s been resting, but on Christmas Eve, she started lifting her right hind leg high up to her belly, and it sometimes gets stuck in place. Even though she can walk and passes neurological tests, there’s discomfort we can’t pinpoint or resolve. I’ve had several vets out, tried PEMF therapy and electro-acuscope & myopulse microcurrent therapy, which bring some relief, but the issue persists. A recent second opinion from my farrier and another vet led to an extensive lameness and neurological exam. The vet now recommends a bone scan, as Luna is experiencing rapid muscle deterioration around her right hip. We still don’t know if there’s a fracture in her hip or pelvis, or if something is affecting her sciatic nerve. She isn’t responding as expected to any tests, and we’re no closer to answers. The funds raised will go directly toward Luna’s bone scan at B. W. Furlong, her hospital stay, and any recommended treatments or medications that follow. There will also be additional costs for any further workup or treatment. Luna is not an old horse—she’s only 13 to 15 years old—and she’s already overcome so much. I adopted Luna from the PSPCA in December 2020 after she was rescued from a neglect situation with her foal. She was skinny, feral, and untrusting, but over the past few years, we’ve built a strong bond. Luna is now a loving, trusting, and cherished part of my family. She loves kids, is gentle and kind, and always tries her best for me. I want to give Luna the best chance at a happy, healthy life. Without this scan, her journey is being cut short before it truly begins. She will always have a home with me, but I can’t make the best decisions for her without answers and the right treatment. Any support to help us get this scan and the care Luna needs means the world to both of us. Thank you for reading our story and for considering helping Luna on her journey to recovery.
