Help Luna Fight A Mystery Illness

Meet Luna!

Luna is one of two grey tabbies, littermates (pictured with her sister, Lilith), that myself and my husband adopted as a bonded pair from a shelter when they were 4 months old!

Starting in September 2024, we noticed that Luna just had not been acting her usual loveable and cuddly self and decided to make an appointment with our vet to get her checked out, and found that in her blood work, some of her liver values were four times as high as is normal. She was lethargic, not eating, had lost a notable amount of weight in a small period of time (Both girls had just been for updated vaccines in early September) and her bilirubin was so elevated she was turning yellow.

We had no idea why this was happening but with the help of our vet we quickly got her on medications and fluids right away. We were able to stabilize Luna, with SOME liver values showing improvement but many were still elevated to an extreme amount.

We spent three months trying various medications (sometimes up to three pills a day) subcutaneous fluids at home (which was terrifying to do ourselves!!) sometimes up to twice a day, and having testing and re-testing done. We had ruled out a few things, but still no definitive answer or diagnosis.

In December, we were referred to a state veterinary hospital for an ultrasound, along with further diagnostics. An ultrasound returned some curious findings, but no definitive answers and a fine needle aspirate of the liver done at the same time was also inconclusive. Since December, we have been playing the game of trying and adjusting various medications, and blood testing, wash, rinse, repeat. Most resulting in no change in her blood work levels OR we would see improvement in some, worsening in others.

While we have managed to get Luna stable on steroid medication for now, it can and will cause harm long term, and is not an ideal solution so we have reached the point where we are up against a biopsy procedure next for her to try to determine (still) what we are even up against.

Unfortunately, 6 months of specialized and frequent vet care and testing has left us needing support. After this biopsy procedure, we will have spent roughly $10,000 on her care. We still do not have a diagnosis for her NOR do we know what the appropriate treatment may potentially look like. We are already at a veterinary hospital with a team of vets and vet techs on her case, she is getting the absolute best care she can, and we want to be able to provide that for our girl Luna, but we need help.

She has been so brave through this entire ordeal. We know Luna has so much more love to give us, and our love for our pets is eternal. We are forever grateful for your generous donation and kindness while we navigate getting our girl healthy again. Any and all funds will be used to pay down her existing vet bills as we prepare her for her biopsy procedure as well as towards future bills for whatever her treatment options may be.
