Hello, my name is Alexa and this is my sweet girl Lula. She is an 8-year-old Staffordshire bully mix. About 2 months ago, she was playing around with my other dog and landed on her back leg wrong. She was limping for some time but it seemed to get better after a while. In May, she got up from laying down and her other leg went out. I thought I’d give her leg some time to rest and heal, the pain seemed to fluctuate and recently it’s been bothering her again.

I took her into the vet to get it checked out thinking she’d just need pain meds and to rest the leg but I was not prepared for what was actually coming. The vet took X-rays of her legs and told me she had torn both cruciate ligaments in her legs, and that she has also developed arthritis which is why some days the pain was manageable. Torn cruciate ligaments are very common in bigger breed dogs and can happen as easily as jumping off the couch.

Unfortunately, the only way she’ll ever be able to walk, run, sit and enjoy day to day life regularly again is with bilateral TPLO surgery. The surgeons will cut the tibia and rotate it to create a “level” tibia plateau, then metal plates will be screwed into the bone to help heal correctly. This is the only surgery available to repair her legs, costing $10,000. Individual surgeries for one leg at a time will cost much more, so both legs at one time is our only option.

The recovery time for this surgery post operation will take 8-12 weeks and she’ll be able to run normally within 5 months after the surgery.
