Lula is five years old, full of sparkle, spunk, and sunshine. She loves her farm life, creating art, and spending time with her parents and siblings, and her favorite color is rainbow. She finds joy in everything and shares it with everyone.

A Heartbreaking Turn of Events

This family has been facing unimaginable challenges back-to-back. Just two weeks after Gentry lost her father to cancer, Gentry and TA’s daughter, Lula, became critically ill. What first seemed like a cold virus quickly became life-threatening. Within days, Lula went from mild symptoms to being admitted to the ER in Tallahassee, and by the next day she was airlifted to Shands Children’s Hospital in Gainesville.

Lula’s Fight

Doctors discovered her left lung was full of pneumonia, with fluid collapsing it and infection spreading. She was also diagnosed with septicemia, a serious blood infection. At Shand’s, a chest tube was placed to drain fluid and stabilize her.

Lula is still in the PICU at Shands. She is stable for now, but her doctors have made it clear she is not out of the woods. More aggressive treatment, including a more invasive surgery than the test tube, is being considered. With an illness this severe, children her age often spend 3-4 weeks in the hospital.

The Family’s Need

Gentry and TA are Gainesville with Lula, and their family income has been deeply affected. With Shands two hours from home, and the long waitlist for Ronald McDonald House, they are facing hotel and travel expenses, loss of income while focused on Lula’s care, and extensive medical costs are ranging from initial Urgent Care and ER visits, to ambulance, hospitalization, helicopter transport, specialized pediatric care and everything in between. Insurance will only cover a small portion of these bills.
