Help Luke with his medical care
Hello, My name is Elena. I've been Luke's girlfriend for 4 years and on behalf of his family and his many, many friends, I'm fundraising for our beloved, Luke Bucksbarg.
Late 9/5/21, Luke was involved in a very severe motorcycle accident with an SUV coming home from a bike meet in Hammond, IN. His wounds required he be air-lifted to Chicago for immediate life-saving care. While he did (thankfully) have his helmet on, his injuries still included broken bones in both legs, ribs, face, several bodily fractures, facial lacerations, a brain bleed as well as many other complications leaving him in critical condition.
For the better part of the next 6 hours, the heroes at the University of Chicago Hospital struggled to stabilize his blood pressure and oxygen levels long enough to get scans done to find out the extent of his injuries. After being placed on a ventilator, given blood transfusions, having drainage tubes placed in his head and chest to drain fluid and reduce pressure, he is currently stable but still heavily sedated and chemically paralyzed for his safety.
His parents Brett and Kris as well as big sister Heather and I have already gone to see him in person and... it would be a gross understatement to even attempt to describe our broken hearts and emotions seeing the man we love so incredibly much so vulnerable and badly broken...
If you know Luke, he is random, spontaneously goofy, constantly involved in a garage project, often the biggest pain in our butts but still loving and always ready to have fun. No matter what he's doing however he is faithfully there for his family and friends and the world needs his presence more than ever now.
Due to the severity of his injuries and how early we still are in discovering a prognosis we know for certain he'll at least be wheelchair bound for a while, need to relearn to walk and go through a lot of physical therapy.
As of right now, Luke is regrettably uninsured and while his family will be pursuing every effort to change this, we still anticipate the steadily incurring bills of his many current surgeries, those to come, general care as well as the undetermined undoubtedly exorbitant cost of his aftercare to be beyond overwhelming. While admitting need, let alone asking for help is never desirable, especially for Luke who always took pride in solving his problems and/or helping others instead, worry and stress is the last thing we all want him to focus on once he's awake and able to begin his lengthy road to recovery.
We already know he never would so we're respectfully asking instead:
- If you feel so inclined to donate, absolutely anything would be helpful and unimaginably appreciated.
- If all you can do is share this link and bring awareness to our dear loved one's precarious situation, please do so with our eternal gratitude.
- If you know of any programs, facilities, especially skilled professionals, any organization, or any other pertinent advice that would be helpful with either his recovery or mounting financial burden please reach out and email through this site. Please include websites, phone numbers, names, locations, etc.
We can't express our gratitude enough for all the love, prayers and uplifting words of kindness you've all sent our way so once again ... thank you for thinking of our Luke and God Bless.
