Fui aceite numa das melhores escolas de teatro do mundo. Mas não consigo ir.

O meu nome é Luís, tenho 37 anos, sou ator, encenador e professor de voz. Nos últimos dez anos, fiz teatro em Portugal sem subsídios, sem apoios institucionais e sem infraestrutura. Fundei a companhia Filho do Meio em 2017 e, desde então, levei Shakespeare a mais de dez mil espectadores — com uma equipa, tal como eu, teimosa e convicta de que o teatro de repertório não deve ser um privilégio de elite.

Este ano, fui aceite no Mestrado em Advanced Theatre Practice da Royal Central School of Speech and Drama em Londres — uma oportunidade para mim, que nunca romantizei esta profissão, muito menos depois de uma década a trabalhar no teatro independente. Representa a hipótese de compreender a função do teatro num mundo fraturado e o papel dos artistas numa sociedade cada vez mais artificial.

O custo total do mestrado e da vida em Londres ultrapassa o que tenho. Até chegar aqui, esgotei todas as minhas opções:

1. Bolsa Gulbenkian (rejeitado, porque tenho mais de 35 anos)

2. Bolsa GDA (não apoia encenadores e exclui formações académicas)

3. Bolsa La Caixa (excluído, licenciei-me antes de 2017)

4. Bolsa Jovens Criadores (não posso, tenho mais de 30 anos)

5. Ministério da Cultura - não existe uma bolsa para artistas que queiram fazer formação no estrangeiro. Nenhuma. Zero.

Se viveres em Portugal, tiveres mais de 35 anos e precisares de ajuda, não a vais encontrar no sistema. Porquê? Quando há centenas de exemplos de sucesso de pessoas que começaram a sua carreira mais tarde. Vera Wang pegou pela primeira vez numa tesoura aos 40 anos, para desenhar o próprio vestido de noiva. Stan Lee estava prestes a desistir quando aos 38 escreveu a sua primeira banda desenhada. E, mais perto de mim, tenho o exemplo do meu pai, que tirou a licenciatura em Direito aos 40 anos.

Se estiverem de acordo comigo, de que não há uma idade para aprender, de que não há uma idade para mudar, então eu peço a vossa ajuda. Qualquer contributo, por mais pequeno que considerem que seja, é profundamente significante para mim.

I’ve been accepted into one of the best drama schools in the world. But I can’t go.

My name is Luís, I’m 37 years old, and I’m an actor, director and voice coach. Over the last ten years, I have been working in theatre in Portugal without grants, institutional support or infrastructure. I founded Filho do Meio in 2017 and, since then, I have brought Shakespeare to more than ten thousand people — alongside a team who, just like me, were stubbornly convinced that repertory theatre should not be a privilege of the elite.

This year, I was accepted onto the Master’s in Advanced Theatre Practice at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London — an opportunity for me, as I have never romanticised this profession, let alone after a decade working in independent theatre. It represents a chance to understand theatre's responsibility in a fractured world and the role of artists in an increasingly artificial society.

The total cost of the Master’s and living in London exceeds what I have.

To get this far, I've run out of options:

1. Gulbenkian Grant (rejected because I am over 35)

2. GDA Grant (rejects directors and excludes academic qualifications)

3. La Caixa Grant (excluded, I graduated before 2017)

4. Young Creators Grant (I’m ineligible, I’m over 30)

5. Ministry of Culture – there is no grant for artists wishing to study abroad. None. Zero.

If you live in Portugal, are over 35 and need help, you won’t find it in the system. Why? When there are hundreds of success stories of people who started their careers later in life. Vera Wang picked up a pair of scissors for the first time at the age of 40, to design her own wedding dress. Stan Lee was on the verge of giving up when, at 38, he wrote his first comic book. And, closer to home, I have the example of my father, who graduated with a law degree at the age of 40.
