My name is Luis, and in August 2021, my life changed dramatically when I contracted COVID-19. I was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and soon after, I was placed in a coma for over a month. When I finally woke up, I was surrounded by machines and faced a long road to recovery. I spent more than three months in the hospital and needed seven to eight months of therapy just to regain some independence. Even now, I rely on a walker to get around, and my health challenges have made it impossible for me to return to the workforce as I once did.

Before I got sick, I owned a dispatching company for owner-operators across the US. My business was my livelihood, and I worked alongside my two adult children. Unfortunately, my absence during my illness devastated the company. I lost almost all my carriers, and my income dwindled to the point where I could no longer pay my bills. I had to let my children go so they could find other work, and I have been running the business by myself ever since. In 2023, I had surgery due to complications from my illness, which added to my challenges. Despite my best efforts, the business is still struggling, and I am now seven months behind on my mortgage and credit card bills. Every month, I worry about how I will pay for essentials like electricity, water, car payments, insurance, and my phone.

I am reaching out for help because I want to keep my home and cover my basic bills for at least a year while I work to rebuild my life. I am also planning to enroll in a nine-month university course to learn a new trade that I can do from home, using my experience with computers.
