Help Luis Hear and Speak

Luis was born deaf and mute, to a poor Nicaragua family with 11 brothers and sisters. He is now 23 years old and has been working here with us, at Costa Dulce, as a gardener, for the last two years.

Hard-working, trustworthy and kind-hearted, Luis’ eyes glow with an inner light that communicates his appetite for life and his strong desire to engage with others. His dream is to become a nature tour guide and share his passion for birds and animals with the many tourists who visit his surrounding community.

For the first time in his life, just two weeks ago, Luis met with an audiologist who delivered amazing news. The doctor confirmed that with the right help, Luis can regain his powers of hearing and speech. We are asking for your support to change this young man’s life forever.

We aim to raise $7050 USD to provide Luis with the gifts that many of us take for granted in life. The ability to hear the morning song of his favorite bird; the ability to tell his mother how much he loves her; the possibility to one day have a family of his own.


The funding we raise will be used to pay for Luis’ Four Step Treatment Plan:

1.  Two hearing aids - $1500 USD
Luis has a hearing range of 50 to 80 decibels which is considered moderate to severe hearing loss that is treatable with hearing aids. We have already received a quote for the 2 hearing aids needed and we have also already taken the mold of his ear needed to order the custom fit hearing aid.

2. Tongue surgery - $1350 USD
Luis was born tongue tied, which is a relatively common physical condition that limits the use of the tongue (the medical term is ankyloglossia). It can be fixed with a relatively simple surgery. We plan to take Luis to the Capital city of Managua for his operation.

3. Travel Expenses for Surgery and Support through recovery - $300 USD

4. Speech therapist - $3900 USD  
Once Luis has the ability to hear and his tongue is operated he will need to learn to speak and understand. We seek to provide him consistent sessions with a speech therapist. We anticipate the sessions costing $50 each and needing two per week for the first 6 months and then one per week for the next six months.

This campaign has been organized by guests of Costa Dulce Eco-Resort and will be executed and administered by Tyson Harris the owner of Costa Dulce. 100% of proceeds will go to direct expense of Luis' treatment and therapy. We will post progress in Luis' journey also with financial reporting as we proceed.
