Hello there! I'm Luis Roberto Lopez-Hernandez, and I'm reaching out to ask for your support as I embark on a journey at Texas A&M University. I've recently received acceptance into the Agricultural Leadership and Development (ALAD) program where soon I will be a part of both the Corps of Cadets and Air Force ROTC. My ultimate aim is to serve in the United States Air Force upon completing my studies. Being a first generation college student fills me with pride. However, this path is not without its hurdles. I must now take on challenges that will test not only my well being but also my devotion to what’s in store including the intense coursework and physical demands while taking on AFROTC and my unit in the Corp of cadets while having to juggle the constant reminder that there might be a chance I don't get to fulfill my goals because of financial struggles.
Even though I received a $4,000 scholarship, I did not meet the requirements for FAFSA assistance. As a result, I am faced with the task of funding tuition, accommodation and various expenses totaling close to $100,000 – either from my own resources or with external aid. The weight of this responsibility has grown significantly greater since my eldest brother passed away recently. He was not just my inspiration but also the person I confided in the most closely with everything happening in my life and within our family's dynamics as well. Both emotionally and financially speaking, too, that heartbreaking period of loss we experienced together as a family deeply affected us by his absence in our lives. With the emotional and financial hardship, it is exceedingly challenging for us to cover the entire expenses associated with higher education without external support. Despite these obstacles, I feel a stronger sense of determination now than ever before. Knowing that I have now checked off the first step to my success alongside my family, friends, and community I am motivated to aspire to reach for more and take any opportunity that comes my way because
I aspire to be the first pilot in my family dedicating at least four years to serving my nation in the Air Force. In time, I aim to establish a business in agriculture and simultaneously pursue real estate ventures. Education means a lot to me beyond a degree; it serves as the groundwork for a brighter tomorrow in my eyes. During my time at Texas A&M University, I aim not only to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive but also to build connections with mentors and peers who will help me evolve. Engaging in initiatives like Explore Austin has allowed me to refine my leadership abilities and enhance my speaking skills. This experience has shown me that facing challenges does not diminish one's aspirations. After the loss of my brother, I came to understand that in his absence my purpose and capacity to inspire others remained intact and that’s what makes me who I am today. I know I will always have him at my side.
Your support will go directly toward:
Tuition and fees
Housing and meals
Books and supplies
Corps of Cadets and AFROTC-related expenses( in my career ahead I plan to graduate from the University of Texas A&M and to get to that point I must acquire uniforms, boots, and any and all required accessories or clothing asked by the Corp.)
Every dollar brings me one step closer to lifting this burden from my family and realizing my full potential.
Thank you for reading, for caring, and for believing in what’s possible.
