Luis has spent nearly his entire life in Indiana, where he became a beloved part of his community. He worked with me at Cracker Barrel, always going above and beyond to brighten everyone’s day. Luis was the person who planned barbecues and gatherings, bringing people together and making sure no one ever felt left out. His kindness and energy made a lasting impact on everyone around him.
Recently, Luis was deported to Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico—a place he’s never known and where he faces real danger. He’s currently staying in a refugee camp, surrounded by the threat of violence from local mafias and cartels. There are heartbreaking stories of refugees being kidnapped or killed, and Luis has nowhere safe to stay and no job. All he was able to take with him were the clothes on his back. Our goal is to help Luis travel to a safer city in Mexico, where he can find temporary housing and start rebuilding his life.
Luis is bilingual and determined to find work and build a new community in Mexico, since he cannot return to the U.S. for at least ten years. The funds raised will help him get to safety, secure basic essentials like food, toiletries, and clothing, and give him the chance to make a positive impact in his new home—just as he did in Indiana. Supporting Luis now means giving him hope and the opportunity to start over in a place where he can thrive.
