Help Luis and Mel

Donation protected
On December 19, 2018 Luchi Chinchilla Dollagaray (Luis Gáytan MacDonald’s mother) passed away in Guatemala. She had been ill for many years with congestive heart failure that recently had led to liver disease. She died of a heart attack with one of her sons by her side. While Luis and Mel and the rest of the family mourn the loss of Luci they are so grateful that she is in heaven with Jesus and no longer in pain. Her last words were that she wanted to go home.

Guatemala is a complicated country. It is very poor and also very corrupt. It’s also is a country with many complicated laws. Insurance had been purchased for Luci because of her declining health. It covered her illnesses and also covered her death and burial costs. Upon Luci’s death the insurance company immediately informed Luis that they would not be covering her burial costs. One doctor over a month ago made a notation that her liver disease was a preexisting condition. It was not. The insurance company, however, decided it was and promptly walked away. Because of death and burial laws, decisions about Luci’s body, funeral, and burial had to be made within 12 hours. Friends and family on site worked tirelessly to fight the insurance company and then ultimately find a funeral home who could take Luci without any pre-arrangements having been made.

By Guatemalan law Luis is responsible for any expenses incurred by his mother’s burial due to him being the first born. Luis and Mel received receipt for her expenses on December 22 and the amount is $11,700 USD. A typical burial in Guatemala is around $8000. Because this was “last minute”, meaning no pre-arrangements were made Luis and Mel have been charged extra. Part of the corruption in Guatemala allows for these kind of outrageous costs for a third world country burial. Most people go in debt for the rest of their life when a loved one dies.

Luis has been supporting his mother financially since his father abandoned her 9 years ago. When he and Mel married together they took over care of her. They have been honored to care for her in their 9 months of marriage although it has been quite costly managing her living costs as their own living expenses and Luis’s extensive immigration costs. That being said, they could use some help. People in Guatemala are trying to help but they themselves are very poor and giving at great expense to themselves. Would you consider helping pay for Luci’s burial costs? Luis and Mel are clinging to Jesus and fully expecting and needing some miraculous provision. Thank you for considering helping them through this tough time both emotionally and financially.
