Lucy lost her beloved pet Canela to old age, and the grief left her withdrawn and deeply sad. Before Layla came into her life, Lucy spent her days alone, rarely leaving her home. Everything changed when we rescued Layla from my job—she had been abandoned in a cage by her previous family, left behind because they no longer had time for her. Layla quickly became Lucy’s loyal companion, bringing joy, comfort, and purpose back into her life.

Now, at 13 years old, Layla is facing serious health challenges. She has been diagnosed with an enlarged heart, oral disease, arthritis, and pancreatitis. The vet says she needs an ultrasound or echocardiogram to address her heart before she can have the oral surgery she desperately needs. X-rays show her heart is pressing against her esophagus, causing her to cough. Lucy is on SSI, and almost all of her income goes to rent and bills. I am also on SSI due to illness, so together we simply cannot afford Layla’s looming medical costs.

We are asking for help to cover the cost of Layla’s heart ultrasound, the oral surgery she needs, her medications, and the special food she will require for the rest of her life. Layla has been Lucy’s faithful friend for more than 13 years, and they need each other now more than ever.
