Help Lucy Get Cancer Treatment

I adopted Lucy on Christmas Eve 2018 on a whim. I found myself, tipsy after brunch, at an animal shelter in Chinatown, and something about her sad eyes and ridiculous ears drew me in. I texted her picture to my mom, who said that if I didn't adopt her, I wouldn't be allowed to eat in the feast of the seven fishes that night, so I signed the paperwork and brought her home!
Lucy (Lovie when I adopted her) had had a rough time. She was found as a stray a year before, chained up in an abandoned building. Her behavior and parts of her body show signs of abuse, dogfighting, and breeding. As is understandable, she can be a little aggressive towards dogs and territorial, which made it hard for the rescue that found her to place her in a home. Before I adopted her, a family with children did, and she became very possessive over the kids, which forced the family to return her. I cannot even begin to imagine how hard it must have been for her to change hands so many times, but even throughout all of that, she is so trusting and loving to humans. I just had to have her to show her the best life that she could have.
Saying that life with Lucy has been a breeze would not be true; she is a difficult dog, reminiscent of her past of abuse and neglect. She is needy, has separation anxiety, is destructive, and can be aggressive when prompted. However, those are not her main qualities; she is typically a sweet, sleepy, lazy, and loving dog who only wants to be near her people and loved. I have made it my mission to provide that for her as much as possible to show her that life doesn't have to be so bad, and she has made marvelous strides towards losing her aggressive tendencies over the course of the two years she's been with me. I am so proud of her progress and know that she will only continue to become sweeter and sweeter as time goes on. Now, Lucy goes on long walks (when she's not being lazy), has the love of many people, sleeps in warm beds every night, and gets way too many kisses!
A few months ago, I noticed a change in Lucy's bark. It had become muted, and then the breathing problems started. I suspected laryngeal paralysis, a condition that paralyzes your vocal cords, not allowing you to make noise when you speak. This is not uncommon in dogs, so I was preparing to hear that news and pay for the one-time surgery to fix it. However, when I took her to the vet for her laryngoscopy, he noticed a lump on her neck. It was then that I started fearing the worst, and my research turned from laryngeal paralysis, to thyroid carcinoma.
She has been under the care of Dr. Rogers, a radiation oncologist at the Animal Medical Center here in NYC since, where she was diagnosed and a treatment plan was set up for her.
At the moment, Dr. Rogers believes the best course of action for Lucy would be to administer 6 doses of weekly radiation therapy, costing $5,000, to attempt to stop metastasis and shrink the cancer cells. It is after that point where she will most likely begin treating Lucy with a chemical drug, costing $800 per month, to work in tandem with the radiation. I am asking for around $10,000 to pay for her radiation and to get started on the chemical drug so I can attempt to prolong Lucy's life for as long as possible. The biggest and most important hurdle right now is the initial $5,000 for the radiation treatments, and then seeing where it goes from there. I know $10,000 is a huge ask, and I don't expect to raise that much, but anything towards that goal will allow me to help Lucy as much as I can.
Lucy is everything to me. She has brought me incredible joy over the two years that I have had her. Her silly faces, wags, soft ears, and baby face are things that I can't bear to part with so soon. Please consider helping me, or sharing this post so others can help. Every little bit counts, and I would be so grateful for your support in this devastating time! Thank you so much for your consideration.
xoxoxo,
Laura and Lucy
