On Wednesday 09/16, the unimaginable happened.
One of our Daycare Dogs, Lucy, along with her kitty siblings were caught in a housefire.
Everyone was rescued from the fire and received immediate treatment on the scene, and we are so so thankful to the Westport Firefighters and the Emergency Responders from neighboring towns who saved our girl and her feline friends. The kitties have been discharged and are doing well.
Lucy is not out of the woods yet.
For 40 minutes, our sweet Lucy was stuck in the basement bedroom of a burning building. Upon rescue by firefighters, her breathing was labored and she was minimally responsive. The pictures you have seen of Lucy - the ones of her being resuscitated on the lawn of her home - are not easy to look at. We have cried many tears here at Paws ‘N’ Play.
Lucy is a perfect dog. She comes to Daycare multiple days a week, and Boards with us when her family travels. There has never been a dog that Lucy hasn’t loved - she has so much love to give to everyone, pups and staff. She loves bubbles, the hose, and dancing with her friends. She loves to play and is the appointed ‘Puppy Sitter’ because of how tolerant she is towards baby dogs. She loves to snuggle up with her friends and her friends love it. If your dog has ever come home from Paws ‘N’ Play completely wiped out - chances are that you have Lucy to thank.
And now, we need your help.
Lucy was doing well in the hospital, but has taken a turn in the past 24 hours. The vets have given her family a 55% chance of survival. If she does not improve today, she will need to be put onto specialized oxygen and possibly intubation. She is still squinting due to the excessive smoke exposure, so she will likely need some specialized eye treatment.
The kitties have been placed with the Humane Society for the next 6-8 months while their family secures new housing - so they will be receiving the best care possible.
But, 3 pets at the emergency vet and the loss of your house is an indescribable financial devastation. Lucy’s family is living out of a hotel right now, and have already poured thousands of dollars into saving their pets.
You would do the same. We all would.
We are asking our Paws ‘N’ Play family to help one of our own with some of the financial support. Once she is out of the hospital, we have her day boardings covered for the foreseeable future to help get her acclimated to normal life while her parents return to work. Lucy is fighting - she is strong - we believe in her, AND she will come back!
We have set up a GoFundMe, where all donations go directly towards helping Lucy and her family with the vet bills. If you can donate anything, even $1, we would be so very grateful.
We love Lucy, and so do your doggies. We want to help as much as we possibly can. If you cannot donate, please share this GoFundMe far and wide! Tell your coworkers, your family and your friends. She & her family need our help.
These pictures are of Lucy at Daycare and in Boarding with her friends. The happy Lucy that we all love; the one we desperately want to return to us, healthy.
We love you so very much, Lucy girl. You got this, and we will be behind you every step of the way. Stay strong.
