Lucilo Tapalla has always been the backbone of our family. For 25 years, he worked tirelessly on a cruise ship, sending support back home to help his parents and siblings build better lives in the province. Even after being diagnosed with a heart condition and diabetes, Lucilo’s spirit never wavered—he’s always put his family first, and his grandchildren adore him. We are grateful for the love and strength he’s shown us, and we want to do everything we can to support him now.
Last month, Lucilo developed a small wound on his big toe. Because of his diabetes, the wound quickly became infected, and he needed surgery to amputate his big toe and fourth finger. The operation went well, but the costs have been overwhelming. Each day he remains in the hospital adds to the bills, and he needs expensive antibiotics, daily medications, and follow-up checkups.
My husband and I are in the US, far from Lucilo in the Philippines, and while we do our best to help, it’s difficult to keep up with the mounting expenses. All of Lucilo’s personal savings have already been used to cover hospital deposits, laboratory tests, and medications, and he only has PhilHealth and a senior discount to help with his medical needs. Unfortunately, he doesn’t qualify for additional health coverage due to his pre-existing conditions.
Our biggest hope is to get Lucilo home where he can recover comfortably. The funds raised will go directly toward his hospital discharge, post-surgery medications, maintenance medicines, daily essentials like diapers, and cash payments for his follow-up checkups.
Every contribution will help ease the financial burden and bring Lucilo one step closer to healing at home. Even the smallest amount means so much to us.
