Dear friends,
I met Lourdes a few years ago when I was learning Spanish. She was my teacher and just after a few classes we became close and established a very special bond. Today she is my dear friend.
She lives for her three children, two twin boys, and a beautiful daughter, all in their teenage years. They are from Antigua, Guatemala, a quaint yet very humble colonial town that lives entirely from international tourism but now is completely shut down due to the coronavirus.
Lourdes was still teaching Spanish until she was diagnosed with cancer in March and had to start chemotherapy immediately due to aggressiveness of her type of cancer - Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The treatment has greatly debilitated her to the point that she struggles to get out of bed, much less work. She comes from a very humble background and both her and her husband (a tour guide) are unable to work due to the current situation. The hospital in Antigua cannot treat her type of disease, so she has to travel to the public hospital in Guatemala City (1h+ away) to get treatment. Due to the coronavirus situation, sometimes the hospital cannot admit her nor provide her with free medication (chemo, painkillers, antibiotics, etc). Furthermore, there is no public transportation available, so she has to use a taxi to get to/from Guatemala City, which many times she can’t afford.
She will have to undergo a very specific type of chemotherapy (injections around her spinal cord) for at least 2 years. This fund aims at raising £12,000, which is equivalent to a local minimum salary for 24 months aproximately. We hope this could provide here with sufficient funds to have access to the treatment while allowing her to help support her family.
Any help, as small as it might seen, will make an enormous impact on Lourdes life, and I can't thank you enough for helping someone so dear to me.
