Two weeks ago, I rescued this 5-year-old terrier mix from a local shelter, where they believe he was surrendered in Oakland, CA.
I’ve lived with dogs my whole life, but Louie is the first one that is all my own. He is easily one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever met; watching him go from a shy shelter dog to a social, happy pup over the last few days has been the highlight of my year.
Unfortunately, this was cut short. Upon taking Louie to his vet for a seemingly minor health concern, we learned that he is experiencing a fairly severe case of pancreatitis, as well as an infection, impacted anal glands, and tapeworms.
Though these are all treatable illnesses, as a single-household pet owner, I’m navigating this crisis on my own. It’s been a jarring and incredibly stressful experience—not just emotionally, but financially.
I have pet insurance, but because I’ve only had him for two weeks, I’m still in the mandatory waiting period. This means I’m facing thousands in vet bills completely out-of-pocket, right as I’m still adjusting my budget to his basic needs.
I want to give Louie the best possible start to his new life, but the timing of this emergency has put me in a really difficult spot. I’m asking for help to cover part of his medical care. Louie’s treatment costs have added up to over $4,500.
UPDATE: LOUIE IS HOME!!! Thankfully, he was released by the vet and is now on his final medications. I still need assistance with recuperating the hospitalization costs, as this looming debt is causing me concern for continuing to have him in my care, especially with vet’s direction for changing his diet (which happens to be a fairly expensive wet and dry food) and the chance that this may turn out to be a chronic condition. I would be so eternally grateful if we can break even to where we started our journey, and be able to move past the insurance waiting period in peace.
Any contribution—no matter the size—takes a huge weight off my shoulders and goes directly to Louie’s recovery treatment costs. Any funds collected over his treatment costs will be donated to a local East Bay Area shelter.
Thank you so much for the support, the kindness, and for helping me get my boy back on his feet.
