Help Louie Get the Lifesaving Heart Surgery He Deserves

Louie is a 3-year-old Chihuahua with the soul of a survivor.

Less than a year ago, Louie was brought to a vet clinic by a family who wanted him euthanized—because he had fleas. He was starving, neglected, and so sick that his little body had almost given up. He’d never even been treated for the fleas that had tormented him for months.

But fate had other plans.

A compassionate vet tech talked the family out of euthanizing him, and when she stepped into the lobby, the woman who would become Louie's forever mama was standing there—just picking up a health certificate for a senior dog. She had always taken in the old, the special needs, the forgotten. But when she saw Louie, she knew in an instant: this one was the exception. No—he was exceptional.

She took him home.

Over time, Louie's body healed. His fur grew back, his eyes brightened, and his spirit returned. He developed a little swagger—the kind only someone who’s been through the fire understands. He became the heart of his new pack at a peaceful retirement home for dogs and cats, spending 95% of his time within two feet of his mama—his happy place.

And then, everything changed.

At a recent checkup, Louie was diagnosed with PDA (patent ductus arteriosus)—a congenital heart defect somehow missed by multiple vets. It can be fatal without surgery. His mama, after a moment of panic, started making calls. There were no board-certified surgeons in their city, but she found one two hours away. Louie is now scheduled for surgery this October.

The procedure will begin with a day of tests, and if all goes as planned, the surgeon will close the PDA using a catheter. If not, they'll need to open his tiny chest—riskier and more intense, with a longer ICU stay.

Either way, Louie needs this to live. And his mama promised him a long, healthy, joy-filled life. She keeps her promises.
