My name is Crista Tarkman, and I am the proud owner and devoted caregiver of Lotus—my beloved Doberman who is so much more than just a pet to me. She is my companion, my comfort, and truly a part of my family. Today, I’m reaching out to you with a heavy heart,
but also with hope, as both her owner and the beneficiary of this campaign. Lotus has been a constant source of joy and strength in my life. From the moment she came into my world, she filled it with energy, loyalty, and unconditional love. She has a playful spirit, a gentle heart, and a way of understanding me without words. Whether it’s greeting me with excitement after a long day or simply sitting by my side when I need comfort, Lotus has always been there. She isn’t just my dog—she’s family, my best friend, and a piece of my heart.
Sadly, everything changed in an instant. Lotus was recently hit by a car, and the person responsible fled the scene without stopping to help. In that moment, she was left injured, scared, and in unbearable pain. It’s something no animal should ever have to endure. Watching her go through this has been one of the most painful experiences of my life. The shock, the fear, and the helplessness I felt in that moment are something I will never forget. After rushing her for medical attention, we discovered that Lotus suffered a serious fracture in her left front leg, just above the wrist. It’s a critical injury that requires urgent
and specialized care. For a dog like Lotus—strong, active, and full of life—this type of injury is devastating. She can no longer move the way she used to. The simple things she loved, like running, playing, and even walking comfortably, are now painful challenges. The veterinarians have recommended immediate surgery at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital, where experienced specialists can properly repair her leg. This procedure is essential to give her the best chance at a full recovery. Along with the surgery, there are additional costs for diagnostics, medications, hospitalization, post-operative care, and rehabilitation therapy. Each step is crucial to ensure that her leg heals correctly and that she regains her strength and mobility. The funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward covering all of these medical expenses. This includes the surgical procedure, pain management, medications, follow-up appointments, and the rehabilitation process that will help Lotus learn to use her leg again.
Recovery will take time, patience, and care, but with the right support, there is real hope for her to return to the happy and active life she once knew. Without this surgery, we are faced with a heartbreaking alternative—amputation of her leg. While some dogs can adapt to life on three legs, it would drastically change her quality of life. Lotus is only 4 years old, full of energy and love, and she deserves the chance to live her life to the fullest. I want to give her every possible opportunity to heal, to run freely again, and to continue being the vibrant, joyful soul that she is. As her owner, it is incredibly difficult for me to ask for help. I have always done everything I can to care for her, but this sudden and overwhelming situation has placed a financial
burden on me that I cannot handle alone. That’s why I’m reaching out to you—with humility, hope, and faith in the kindness of others.
