Help Lorna Fight MS and Access HSCT Treatment

Hi, my name is Lorna. I’m 36 years old - a wife, a mum to two children (aged 13 and 2 — big age gap, I know!) and I work full time.

I’ve lived with multiple sclerosis for 19 years, and I was diagnosed at just 17. It was completely terrifying at the time, but for many years I was able to live a fairly normal life.

That changed in 2019 when I experienced a major relapse, with six active lesions across my brain and spinal cord. I lost a lot of mobility at that point — I struggled to walk, had severe balance issues, and reduced dexterity in my hands. Despite this, I continued working full time until COVID lockdown.

Since having my little boy in 2024, my mobility has gradually declined further. My current disease-modifying therapy (Tysabri) is no longer preventing progression, and I am genuinely worried about what the future may hold.

There is currently no cure for MS, but I am trying to raise funds for HSCT (haematopoietic stem cell transplant), which aims to halt disease progression and, in some cases, improve function. For many people, it can offer the chance to stabilise their condition and regain parts of their life.

In February this year, I experienced another relapse. It started with extreme fatigue and a burning, scalding sensation in my left hand, which then spread to my right hand and right leg. My mobility deteriorated quickly — I couldn’t walk properly, swim, or even stand long enough to kick a ball with my little boy. I was treated with high-dose steroids, which thankfully helped, but it left me fearful of what another relapse could take from me.

After extensive research and medical guidance, I am aiming to undergo HSCT in Puebla, Mexico at Clinica Ruiz. They have been performing this treatment for over 30 years with strong outcomes, and their care is highly regarded.

Unfortunately, although HSCT is available on the NHS in the UK, I do not meet the strict eligibility criteria due to the length of time I’ve had MS (the cutoff is 15 years). At 36 years old, with a young family and a full-time job, I feel I still have so much life I want to live and be present for.

The total cost includes:
• HSCT treatment: £47,000 (medical care, accommodation, meals)
• Flights: £3,000
• Physiotherapy on return: £1,500
• MRI scans: £1,000
• Carer costs (my husband staying home with the children): £2,300

Total: £54,800

Any support, whether a donation or simply sharing this page, means more than I can put into words. I am determined to do everything I can to slow this disease and protect my future with my family!

Thank you so much for reading and for helping in any way you can ❤️
