My name is Lorelai Ashworth. I am a 26-year-old trans woman who has been living, studying, and working in the U.S. for 10+ years. Earlier this year, after coming out to my parents as transgender, they rejected my identity, canceled my grad school tuition fund, and threatened me to go back to China.
In fear of torture and execution, I made the decision to flee China, and started applying for asylum in the U.S. with the help of an immigration law firm, since I've spent all of my adulthood here. Luckily through the support of my friends, I was able to pay the down payment required for the law firm to start on my case, I was able to start on HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), and I was provided with free room and board at a friend's place.
Unfortunately, after 6 months in quarantine, legally not allowed to work thus having no income, constantly asking my friends and families for support, missing two monthly payments to the law firm (I can only miss one more before they have to terminate our contract), and now potentially losing my HRT, I have to make the decision to create this fundraiser in hope to reach a wider audience.
To summarize my current financial situation:
- My monthly payment to the law firm is $500.
- I have another month of HRT ranging from $50-$90, since the pricing on my medication fluctuates. Afterwards, I have to start a new service here in Roswell, which will estimatingly cost $200+.
- In addition, I also have several essential monthly subscriptions, such as phone bill (to keep in contact with the law firm, my banks, and immigration offices) and music (to help with my mental health), These in total costs about $50/month.
According to my lawyer, I should be able to get my work permit around late November/early December if my application goes through smoothly. My hope for this fundraiser is to have enough money to carry me through until then, when I will be able to have a job thus income, and finally support myself.
Since the next payment to the law firm is coming up at the end of this month (September 25~), and I need to start finding a new provider for my HRT soon, I am going to need at least $800 by then. I know there isn't much time left, but this month is crucial for the rest of my journey.
