My name is Jo Jordan, and I have worked in social services in Seattle / King County for a combined total of about 7 years. I have asked for assistance before in a similar circumstance, and with the current war on anything DEI, public interest, etc. I totally understand that there are folks in more acute need that deserve everyone's limited resources, but there's no harm in asking...
Against my better judgment I accepted a position with the notorious Low Income Housing Institute, in order to keep me and my disabled partner housed. I was lauded as one of the best case managers in my cohort, being appointed a "mentor" to newer case managers and asked to provide overdose prevention trainings to other staff. Two months shy of working there a year, however, management was abruptly replaced without explanation, and my cohort was brought under the management of the Tiny Home Villages. I was censured for handing out safe use supplies (a practice in place for years at the building I worked at, and one that is acknowledged by even the outgoing Biden administration to reduce sex trafficking, the spread of disease and accidental death / overdose), and for elevating the spread of ICE-related "Know Your Rights" information above encouraging the residents to vote for Prop 1A (an initiative that would benefit LIHI economically). I advocated assertively that LIHI continue to provide shelf-stable hunger relief and hygiene items for our mobility-impaired, aging and highly vulnerable residents when management decreed that clients "can get toilet paper at the food bank if they can't afford any!" while pushing through costly and unnecessary cosmetic improvements on the building. I was soon told to "bring my keys, badge, cell phone, laptop, routers," etc. to a "disciplinary" meeting with upper management and HR, the reasons for which they refused to reveal to my Union rep and I. Rather than endure the obvious firing planned for me, I resigned in order to avoid the "have you been fired" question on future applications.
I am trying to at least pad two months rent, bills and living expenses while I look for alternate employment.
