There have been #EndSARS protest going on since 2016, but in October 2020 and a tripping point, where other young in Nigeria spoke up against police brutality and bad governance in Nigeria, and have put their lives and safety on the line for a better Nigeria. As this peaceful movement and the protests had proceeded over the past few weeks, there had been a recent spate of violence from a number of forces outside of the peaceful protestors. The situation is complex and our dear Lola Adele-Oso and her family were attacked on October 21, 2020, at 7:30 AM as part of the spate of violence and looting in Lagos that ensued.
Lola had recently returned to Nigeria to work on her business and human rights initiatives. She and I were in the middle of supporting #EndSars protesters with data transfers for those who were protesting. We were just talking about a plan to send out more credits to reach more than the last giveaway when the first rocks hit the windows.
Lola and several other occupant's lives were threatened with machetes and other weapons. The unknown assailants swarmed the compound destroying and setting fire to her business documents and all her belongings. She managed to escape from the compound with only a small bag that contained her phone, passport, and computer and the clothes on her back after being in hiding for hours.
Lola's good friend Eniola and I have spoken to Lola and really feel that the trauma our sister has experienced is significant and requires us and the community to show up for her during this time. Lola is one of the most resilient people we know, she has dedicated her life and her work to helping the most vulnerable including her work as the DC and Maryland representative for Bring Back our Girls and Co-founder of Act for Accountability and Diaspora Rising. She has mobilized help and support that has impacted the lives of thousands of people and we in our own way want to honor that in supporting her to rebuild what she has lost.
This sparked us to start this fundraiser.
- Sincerely,
Rashida & Eniola.
