We are asking for your support on our continued healing journey…
Loki is a bright and resilient young woman who graduated High School over a year early. She is only 17, and this June began to have trouble walking and was constantly in pain. After a month of doctors appointments, scans, unknown answers and one very scary trip to the ER, MRI imaging revealed a mass in her lumbar spine from L3-L5 that had grown so large it compressed her sacral nerves, causing the pain and inability to walk. She underwent surgery on the 4th of August and spent 9 days at Children’s Hospital. It was a very hard and scary time for her and family. The surgery was a success with complete resection of the tumor.
However, pathology came back later to reveal she has Myxopapillary Ependymoma WHO grade ll. This is a rare type of central nervous system cancer that is known to recur locally or elsewhere in the spine or brain. Proton radiation therapy was recommended. This therapy is very extensive and five days a week in DC for six weeks. She will undergo MRI’s every three months to make sure there is no return of the tumor elsewhere in the brain and spine
Loki has been incredibly brave and has faced all of this news with such strength and will. Due to her treatments, her healing nerves that had been compressed by the tumor have grown inflamed and has brought pain back to her legs and affects her everyday living.
Loki lives with her mom, Amanda, and they could really use your help right now. Amanda works over an hour away in the opposite direction of her daughter’s treatments reducing her ability to work as needed. Winter is coming and oil heat is expensive, too. Ultimately, when a family needs to heal, they need all of our help to not stress about being able to get through the winter and be able to focus on healing, rest and support.
